The tradition of Easter Bonnet

The tradition of the Easter bonnet – the Easter hat – was born in America, and precisely in New York, in 1870. The civil war had just ended, people were starting to go out again, to pour into the street and what better occasion on Sunday than Easter to regain one’s status and show oneself in society?
It was already customary in some families to buy a new dress or hat for Easter, to present themselves at their best during this important holiday which represents the Resurrection. In this spirit, new clothes symbolized rebirth.

In 1870, therefore, after a period of great depression and after the Lent restrictions, people wanted even more to get dressed up and wear his new, beautiful and colorful clothes. Thanks to the “good society” ladies who wore their hats to go to mass in St. Patrick’s, a simple walk turned into a veritable parade of pretty and fashionable headdresses, which went down in history as the first Easter Parade.

Since then, every year, the ladies competed to see who showed off the most original creation: over the years, the strangest and most bizarre Easter hats have followed one another, decorated with bows, feathers, flowers, eggs, even stuffed bunnies .
